What is Schoology?

Schoology is a Learning Management System (LMS), a classroom organization tool that has more to offer than the current tools we provide (eBackpack, Google Classroom, etc).  An LMS provides a framework in which course content and resources can be organized and integrated with assessment and classroom management tools.  If you've ever taken an online college course, you probably have used an LMS.  Click here to learn more about Schoology.

Like eBackpack, Schoology integrates with PowerSchool. Teacher and student accounts and course enrollments are created automatically.  All CCS teachers and administrators currently have access to Schoology.  You may begin using it with your classes and students at any time.  If you'd like to get started right away, simply point your browser to https://cozad.schoology.com.  You log in the same way you log into PowerSchool and eBackpack, with the same username and password.  You may also download the Schoology app for your iPad.

While getting started with Schoology is pretty simple and intuitive, there are several powerful features available for which we would like to provide training.  Our strategy is to develop a cadre of teachers with enough experience and expertise to help others.  This process will begin later this month, with Patty and one teacher being trained directly by Schoology.  We will then focus our initial local training on 6 to 8 HS and MS teachers during Q3, finally offering both formal and informal training to all HS and MS staff (along with any elementary staff who are interested) by the start of Q4.  Ideally, all interested teachers will be able to use Schoology for at least one class during Q4.  If you are interested in being one of the "early adopters" please let us know!

If all goes well, Schoology will be replacing eBackpack.  We have not made any decisions yet on when we might drop eBackpack, but we know for sure that eBackpack will remain available through the end of the 2015-16 school year.

Classroom Connections: Virtual Field Trip Opportunities for Cozad Classrooms

How cool would it be if you could take your classes on a trip to NASA, visit museums across the country or UNL's Morrill Hall, tour an agri-business, speak with a group of veterans, or visit with an acclaimed author?  Would it be even better if you didn't have line up transportation, get permission slips signed, or arrange meals?  What if there was little or no cost?

Image result for nasa spaceImage result for feedlotImage result for museum

These experiences ARE available today, through Virtual Field Trips (VFTs), and we would like to help you take your students on one (or more) of these amazing trips!  In fact, we'd like to make the process as easy as possible for you as a classroom teacher, so we'll keep it as simple as...

  1. Pick out a field trip and the dates that would work for your class(es).
  2. Complete this form.
  3. Enjoy the VFT!
We'll schedule things, get your computer set up, and make sure that everything works.  All you'll need to provide is your classroom computer connected to your projector.  We'll connect a conference camera with a quality microphone that will allow you and your students to interact with the presenter.

After the trip, we will ask that you complete a short reflection form for feedback on the experience.

That's it.  You can take as many trips as you like.  Please note that these experiences are designed for education, and most include both pre- and post- trip activities for your students.

Please check out the selection of VFTs by following the link in #1.  If you are interested in one, please complete the form in #2, and we'll get everything lined up for you.

Feel free to contact Dave or Patty if you have questions or would like to visit with us first.

Should you take electronic candy from strangers?

Imagine if one of your friends told you there was a really creepy guy hanging out on the corner who was giving away free candy and soda.  You might be brave enough to go check this out, so you ask the creepy stranger if you can have some candy.  He says, "Sure!  Just let me look through your wallet or purse, please.  It will only take a second and I promise I will never use the information in it."
Image result for creepy stranger

Would you do it?  You might say no, but what if he offered you LOTS of candy?  What if he offered you UNLIMITED candy?  Would you be tempted?  He's not going to steal you wallet or the money you have in your purse.  He's just looking at (and recording) your information.

Image result for candy

Would you feel safe in this situation?  Would you give up your information?

Currently we have some users who are giving up their electronic Apple ID keys and other information to creepy strangers (check this post to see how it works).  They don't realize they are doing this, they think they're just getting free game rewards or tokens (electronic candy) that you normally have to pay for in the app store.  Is this dangerous?

Image result for clash of clans

One thing that is generally true is that "free" is usually not free.  Some games are "free", but when you play them, you soon realize that "free" is just a way to get you to want something that you have buy.  This is not illegal, and many legitimate businesses use this model.  But in this model, the vendor is just after some of your hard-earned money.

If you are using a "free" hack to get something, you are not paying with money.  You are paying with something far more valuable.  You are paying with your private information.

Think about what your private information is worth.  Think about what you could lose if someone stole your apple ID and purchased thousands of dollars worth of apps.  Think about what could happen if your apple ID information was enough to steal your identity and you could not get a loan for a new car, could not get into college, or could not get a job.

Image result for identity theft

This could easily happen if you share your information with creepy strangers.  It happens to thousands of people every day.  On the internet, the easiest way to steal things from people is to just ask them for it.
