Changes in the CHS 1-1 iPad Program for 2015-16

Please note the following changes in the CHS 1-1 iPad program for 2015-16...

  1. 2015-16 grades 9, 10, and 11 will get new iPads next year.  These will be the iPad Air model.  Please plan your case purchase accordingly, as cases for other models will NOT work on this model.  This includes the iPad Air 2.
  2. The take-home fee is being reduced from $35 to $25.  This fee is required for take-home privileges and covers the cost of ONE iPad repair per year.  If you elect to not pay this fee, you may not take your iPad home.  In addition, you are still responsible for repair costs in case of neglect or misuse, and you will not be eligible for one free repair.
  3. Cozad Schools will NOT be providing cases for the new iPads.  It is your responsibility to provide a case for your new iPad.  The old iPad cases will NOT work on the new iPads.
  4. Only incoming freshmen and new students are required to attend an iPad parent meeting.  If you have attended a high school parent meeting with your parent in the past, you do NOT have to attend any more meetings.  You and your parents DO still have to sign the 24/7 iPad Agreement and Responsible Use Policy each year.  You will also need to pay the $25 fee each year if you wish to take your iPad home with you.

If you or your parents have any questions, please contact the high school office or send an email to dave.evertson@cozadschools.net or patty.wolfe@cozadschools.net

CHS Parent & Student iPad Information

At Cozad High School we strive to make our students life-long learners and prepare them to enter the world of the 21st century as responsible and productive adults.  We see exciting opportunities for student education through the use of mobile technologies and cloud computing.

To that end, we provide to each student a mobile device (Apple iPad).  While we require the device to be used by the student at school, we also provide the option to the parent of allowing the device to be taken home after school, on weekends, and to be kept throughout the summer.

Here are the key features of the CHS Haymaker 1-1 iPad program:

Procedures

  • Students will be loaned an iPad which may be used for both academic and personal use.   We allow the iPad to be taken home, provided a parent or legal guardian and the student sign the required agreements and pay the annual $25 use fee.  This fee is required to help us keep student repair costs down, as the school will pay for one repair or replacement in case of damage or accident each school year.  Students and parents are responsible for additional loss or damages.  You may choose to not pay the fee, in which case the student will not be allowed to take the iPad home, but will have it for use during the school day.  Please note that students and parents are still financially responsible for repairs or replacements required due to negligence or misuse, even if you do not participate in the take-home program.
  • Parents and students are required to attend one parent meeting before take-home privileges will be granted.  The purpose of these meetings will be to explain the program and updates, answer your questions, and to complete the necessary paperwork for your student to participate in the program.  Parent and student must attend together unless alternative arrangements are made with Mr. Beckenhauer.  Dates and times will be announced through the school web site, email, and other school communication outlets.
  • Students who violate the Take-home Agreement or Responsible Use Agreement or classroom iPad rules at any time during the school year may have their iPad confiscated by the teacher, administrator, or technical personnel.  In such cases the student will be provided with an alternate method for meeting daily classroom requirements.  In addition, the student may be required to attend a STOPiT class.

iPad Care/Protection/Repair

  • We strongly recommend that the student provide a protective case for their iPad.  Please note that the older cases will not work with the newer iPads (grades 9-11).
  • Damaged or lost iPads are the responsibility of the student and their parent or guardian.  If damage is caused by obvious negligence or abuse, the student will be charged for the cost of repair or replacement.  Final determination of abuse or neglect is at the sole discretion of the building principal and district technical staff.
  • In cases of accidental breakage, loss or theft that is NOT determined to be negligent or willful on the part of the student, a replacement device will be provided at no cost to the student for the first incident each year, provided they are participating in the take-home program and have paid the $25 fee.  Subsequent incidents are subject to the cost of repair (typically $100 - $130) or replacement ($379).  In extenuating circumstances, the building principal may elect to reduce the liability amount for the second repair within a given school year.

Student Accounts and Resources

  • Students will have individual google and Apple ID accounts assigned and will be required to use a wide variety of communication tools and applications, which will be provided by the school at no cost to the student.
  • Various learning management tools will be provided to staff and students to make it possible to send and receive assignments, communicate, collaborate and create content.
  • Various educational apps will be provided to staff and students through the district’s volume purchase program and the app request procedure.  These will include, but are not limited to, electronic textbooks in certain classes.
  • Student content, along with certain books and applications provided by the school shall become the sole property of the student, to be used and available throughout their academic career, both at Cozad High School and beyond.
  • We strongly encourage you to discuss this program with your student and we ask you to monitor your student's device usage and social networking activity outside of school.

Supervision

  • Our philosophy at Cozad High School is that we must provide rich, authentic, and individualized learning experiences for all of our students.  To that end, we require responsible use and behavior on the part of our students.  Each student and staff member must sign a Responsible Use Agreement each year.
  • The school provides wireless access and internet filtering services for use on campus.  The school is not responsible for providing connection or filtering services to students off-campus or at home.   We strongly encourage and support parents in providing home supervision of student electronic activities.
  • The school maintains resources to manage school iPads, computers and other devices.  These resources allow us to determine installed applications and network access history while the student is at school.  While we can monitor what the student has installed on their device, and we can monitor network access while at school, it is impossible to provide continuous supervision of online behavior.  Our philosophy is to teach responsible behavior to our students and to hold them accountable for their actions in all areas of civil behavior.
  • We support and encourage parents to:
    • Follow or join social media networks used by their child.
    • Establish rules for home use of electronic devices and communication outlets regardless of the device.
    • Communicate with their child about responsible online behavior.
    • Investigate and understand the risks and benefits of participation in social media and online activities.
    • Model positive and responsible digital citizenship at all times.

End of Year iPad Announcements for Grades 8-11

2014-15 CHS students:

The last day of school is Friday, May 22nd.  To check out of school on that day, we must sign off on your iPad.  WE WILL NOT SIGN OFF ON YOUR IPAD IF THE SCREEN IS BROKEN OR CRACKED!  In addition, you will not be allowed to take your iPad home for the summer if your screen needs to be repaired.

As spelled out in your device agreement, CHS covers the cost of ONE ipad repair due to accident each year.  After that repair is used, the student/parents are financially responsible for further repairs.

Some of you have cracked screens or other defects but have not had your iPad repaired.  We are sending you this note because if you do not have these repairs submitted to us BEFORE +May 8, your repair will have to be done in the summer, and you will not have access to your iPad in the summer until the repair is completed, EVEN IF YOU PAY FOR THE REPAIR.

IT IS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE TO HAVE YOUR IPAD REPAIRED BEFORE +MAY 8.  Failure to do so could result in your iPad not being available to you until the start of school in August.

If you have questions, please email Mr. Evertson (dave.evertson@cozadschools.net) or Ms. Wolfe (patty.wolfe@cozadschools.net)

CHS iPad Summer Take-home Program Announcements

2015-16 CHS students and parents,

As we prepare to close out the 2014-15 school year, we wish to inform you of the optional CHS iPad Summer Take-home Program.  This program supports our belief that student learning and growth is not limited to the school day or year, and allows us to promote and encourage lifelong learning.  For these reasons, we offer 2015-16 Haymaker high school students the opportunity to keep their school-issued iPad for the summer.  This program does not apply to seniors who will graduate in 2015, but it DOES apply to current 8th grade students who will be moving to the high school next year.  Click here for more information about the iPad Take-home Program at CHS.
If you and your student do not wish to participate in the Summer Take-home Program, the student will simply hand in their iPad on the last day of school and it will be returned to them when the 2015-16 school year begins.  You may still elect to attend the spring meetings in preparation for the 2015-16 school year, but additional meetings (dates to be determined) will be scheduled before the start of school in August.

Please note the following changes in the program from previous years!

  1. Students and their parents are now only required to attend ONE parent meeting in their CHS career.  Current CHS students who take their iPads home are NOT required to attend another parent meeting.  Current 8th graders and all new students who will be entering CHS for the first time ARE required to attend a parent meeting before they will be given take-home privileges.  This applies whether or not they are participating in the summer take-home program.
  2. 2015-16 students in grades 9-11 will be issued new iPads at some point in the summer or fall of 2015.  The cases used for our current iPads will NOT work with the new iPads.
  3. The school will no longer provide mandatory iPad cases.  We STRONGLY recommend that students purchase a case which will protect the iPad.
  4. The take-home fee which helps to cover repair costs has been reduced from $35 to $25.  This fee covers ONE iPad repair per year.  Subsequent repairs within a given school year are the financial responsibility of the student and parents.  Typical repair costs are $100 - $130.  Replacement cost is $379.
Cozad High School does NOT require students to participate in the take-home program.  Students and parents may elect to leave the iPad at school, thus avoiding the take-home fee.  However, students and their parents ARE still responsible for repair costs if the iPad is damaged due to negligence or lack of proper care while it is at school.  If you elect to not pay the take-home fee, your student is not entitled to one free repair.

In order to participate in the iPad Summer Take-home Program, students and their parents must meet the following requirements.
  1. Incoming freshmen must attend ONE pre-summer parent meeting.  These meetings are required for all incoming freshmen.  At least one parent or guardian AND the student must attend this meeting together.  Meetings will take place in the high school auditorium at 7 PM.  Meeting dates are:

  • Tuesday, April 14
  • Wednesday, April 15
  • Thursday, April 16

Updated information will be posted periodically on the Haymaker Tech Cafe blog and on our iPad Central web page.

  1. Sign and return the Device Take-home Program and  Responsible Use Agreements.  At the pre-summer parent meeting, you and your student will sign these agreements using the student’s iPad and submit these forms electronically.  Both a parent AND the student must sign these documents.  Because they will be signed and submitted electronically during the meeting, there is no reason to print them now nor do you need to bring them with you to the meeting.
  2. Pay the $25 iPad take-home use fee for 2014-15.  The school will accept cash or checks, and will provide you with a receipt upon payment.  This fee may be paid at the parent meeting, but MUST be paid by the final day of school, May 22nd, 2015 for the student to participate in the Summer Take-home Program.

The student iPad must be in good repair and working order.  If the student’s current iPad is in need of repair due to a cracked or broken screen or other significant hardware damage, it MUST be repaired through the 2014-15 Take-home Program before the student will be eligible for the 2015-16 program.  Students have been notified to schedule these repairs with the tech staff before May 8, 2015.  For more information, please check out the announcement previously sent to students.

We are excited to provide these learning opportunities to our students and we look forward to working with you in preparing your child for the world of the 21st century!
